The Importance of an Embroidery Cushion
May 06,2023
Embroidery is the age-old craft of creating patterns and designs on fabrics with needles, colourful threads and embellishments. Its humble beginnings started as a means to mend clothing, but the art has grown into a creative craft that decorates and enhances garments.
Depending on the fabric and embroidery stitch used, it can either communicate an idea or just add interest and texture to the piece. It can also be used to create a contrasting element that sets a fabric item apart from its surroundings.
Different kinds of fabric are useful for certain styles and techniques, so choose a material that will be durable enough to stand up to the process. Woven fabric is best as it will hold its shape well with added stitches. Cotton, linen, muslin, and canvas are all good choices. Duck cloth is another great option as it is sturdy and does not fray.
There are many types of needles available for embroidery. A standard sewing needle is usually sufficient, but you may want to consider using a special embroidery needle with a larger eye and longer shaft for specific stitching needs. These can be found at most fabric stores and online, and are often sold in sets with a few different sizes.
A specialised needle called a milliner needle is the ideal choice for some stitching techniques that require wrapping thread multiple times. These include bullion knots, the drizzle stitch and French knots.
Stitches that are common in hand embroidery include backstitch, chain stitch, cross stitch, satin stitch and blanket stitch. These basic stitches can be modified into other variations, giving you the opportunity to create a multitude of designs.
